activated, sends a message back to anyone sending you an
email. You can use it if you are away from your desk to
alert people to your absence etc. You can manage your
autoresponders and email via your control panel.
ASP
Support
Every account at Urja Online Web Hosting comes with ASP
(Active Server Pages) support.
ASP is
Microsoft's solution to server-side scripting, and
ChiliSoft's ASP technology is an exact functional
equivalent to Microsoft's ASP service, for Linux servers.
The technology enables developers to dynamically generate
Active Server Web pages and use a variety of development
tools like Frontpage, Dreamweaver and GoLive, as well as a
range of scripting languages such as Visual Basic, JScript,
C++, PowerBuilder and Java, to create dynamic web pages
and build Web applications.
Unlike our competitors, there is no additional cost for
ASP on your account.
What makes Active Server Pages convenient is that they are
essentially HTML pages with embedded ASP code. So an ASP
page contains HTML which is static as well as ASP tags
which are processed on the server. Unlike CGI scripts,
ASPs can be in your www directory or below. In addition to
the convenience, ASP has a large following, so there are a
wealth of resources sites, sample code, and tutorials on
the web.
NOTE: If you are an existing customer and your account is
on one of our older servers, we will need to move your
account to one of our newer servers for you to use ASPs.
Please open a Help Desk ticket and request ASP support.

Bandwidth/Monthly Traffic
This is the monthly measurement of data coming in and out
of the server, and specifically your website. Sites are
given a guide amount of potential traffic they can
receive. Bandwidth is measured in GB - gigabytes (1,000
megabytes), and is recorded/calculated when a file is
downloaded. 1 GB of bandwidth as a guide provide approx
100,000 hits (which are individual file requests, i.e
pictures, web pages, media) a month. Additional bandwidth
can be added to your account on an ad-hoc basis.
Browser
A program that provides a way to read hypertext and thus
look at and interact with (i.e. "browse") the information
on the World Wide Web. Technically, a Web browser is a
client program that uses the Hypertext Transfer Protocol
(HTTP) to make requests of Web servers throughout the
Internet. The most frequently used Web browsers are
Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Netscape's Navigator.

Disk Space
Web space, or disk space, is the amount of allocated
storage you are given on your web hosting account. This
allows you to store files, web pages, email, databases and
graphics. Web space is always measured in MB (megabytes).
This option can be easily upgraded if you are approaching
your allocated amount.
Domain name
A domain name is a Web address. The domain name is mapped
to an IP address (which represents a physical point on the
Internet). When someone types a domain name into a Web
browser's address field, the requested Web page will open.
A domain name consists of a top-level and a second-level
domain. The top-level domain (TLD) is the domain name
extension located to the right of the dot (" . ").
Examples of top-level domains are .com, .org, ,net., and .gov.
Located to the left of the dot (" . "), the second-level
domain name (SLD) is the "readable" part of the address.
The SLD usually refers to the organization or entity
behind the Internet address.
Using Your Own Domain Name (i.e
mydomain.com)
Allows you to host any world wide domain name either by
transferring it from another provider, or registering it
via our website. Registration fees are not included.

Email Aliases
An email alias is a shell email account which can be set
up to point or redirect mail from one place to another.
For instance, if you set up an alias for info@mydomain.com

info@mydomain.com would be automatically sent to your
hotmail account. Aliases can be directed anywhere, even
internally and can point to multiple places. We supply
unlimited aliases with our accounts and include a
"catch-all-account" alias which points any unaddressed
email to your default account... You can manage your alias

HTML
Hypertext Markup Language. The markup language that
constitutes the set of markup symbols or codes inserted in
a file intended for display on a World Wide Web browser
page. The markup tells the Web browser how to display a
Web page's words and images for the user. Each individual
markup code is referred to as an element — or a tag. The
current version of HTML is HTML 4.0. However, the major
browsers — Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Netscape's
Navigator — implement some features differently and
provide non-standard extensions.
HTTP
Hypertext Transfer Protocol. The protocol used for moving
hypertext files across the Internet. Requires an HTTP

your local directory. Meaning you can install bulletin
boards, form scripts or any other scripts you wish. Active
CGI means the code can interact with the server extensions
efficiently. See CGI
PHP
PHP is a server-side scripting language for creating
dynamic Web pages. You create pages with PHP script code
and HTML. When a visitor opens the page, the server
processes the PHP commands and then sends the results to
the visitor's browser, just as with ASP or ColdFusion.
Unlike ASP or ColdFusion, however, PHP is Open Source and
cross-platform. PHP runs on Windows NT and many Unix
versions. It can also be built as an Apache module and as
a binary that can run as a CGI.
PoP3 Email Boxes
PoP 3 email boxes are basically full spec email
accounts. These are fully individual email accounts which
can be collected via client software (Outlook, Lotus or
Eudora etc) and allow complete administration via the web.
You can collect your email from any ISP, any location in
any country, which makes it a dynamic and professional
solution to email management.

S
Server
In general, a server is a computer or software package
that provides services to other computer programs in the
same or other computers. The term can refer to a
particular piece of software, such as a World Wide Web
server, or to the machine on which the software is
running. A single server machine can have several
different server software packages running on it, thus
providing many different servers to clients on the
network.
SMTP/Outgoing Mail
This feature allows you to send email through our system
from any ISP or provider. Also a useful feature for
sending email from scripts and mailing lists.
SSH
Telnet is a protocol that allows you to access your web
server files remotely as if you were sitting at a computer
terminal at the server. Telnet is used by advanced users
for checking log files, setting permissions on CGI
programs, running scripts at the command line, etc. The
version of Telnet used at Urja Online is called SSH. SSH
is more secure than regular Telnet, and the increased
security is why we use it.
SSI
Server Side Include (SSI) is a feature of CGI (in
conjunction with your server) that allows you to
dynamically insert a piece of information including the
current date, any HTML file, and execute CGI/PERL scripts
in your web page. The browser displays the SSI code as if
it was hard coded onto that page.
SSL
Short for Secure Sockets Layer, SSL is a protocol
developed by Netscape for transmitting private documents
via the Internet. SSL works by using a private key to
encrypt data that's transferred over the SSL connection.
Both Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer support SSL,
and many Web sites use this protocol to obtain
confidential user information, such as credit card
numbers.
Every account at Urja Online Web Hosting comes with SSL
support. You may install your SSL certificate using the
account Control Panel.
Statistics
Urja Online provides a detailed Statistics service which
generates graphs and tables of your visitors and web site

T
Top-level domain (TLD)
In the domain name system (DNS), the top-level domain (TLD)
is the highest level of the hierarchy after the root. In a
domain name, the TLD is portion of the domain name that
appears to the extreme right. Examples are .biz, .com, .gov,
.mil, and .org.
The top-level domains have certain guidelines attached,
but are for the most part available to any registrant,
anywhere in the world. Exceptions are the restricted TLDs
(rTLDs), which include .aero, .mil, .museum, and .pro,
that require the registrant to represent a certain type of
entity, or to belong to a certain community. Where
appropriate, a top-level domain name can be of geographic
significance and hence only available to registrants in a
certain locale defined by the TLD. These are called
country-code TLDs (ccTLDs).

U
Uniform Domain Name Dispute
Resolution Policy
ICANN's Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP)
defines how disputes over domain-name registrations are
resolved in the global top-level domains (.biz, .com,
.info, .name, .name, .net, .org, .pro, and .ws, as well as
.aero, .coop, and .museum). The UDRP does not apply to
country-code top-level domains, except in a few cases
where the local administrator has decided to adopt it.
URL
Uniform Resource Locator. A URL is the address to a
destination on the Internet or intranet. The URL consists
of a communications protocol followed by a colon and two
forward slashes and the destination location. Examples of
URLs are:

V
Virtual host
Also called an IPP (Internet presence provider). In order
to establish a full-time presence on the Internet, one
needs to have computers that are connected continuously to
the Internet. Special hardware and software are needed, as
well as constant maintenance of a full-time high-speed
connection to the Internet. Virtual hosting is the
provision of Web server hosting services so that a company
(or individual) doesn't have to purchase and maintain its
own Web server and connections to the Internet. Because
the electronic frontage (or Web site) actually resides on
the IPP's computers, and not that of the entity, it is
virtual. Hence the name.
